There are plenty of reasons a truck driver starts looking around at other jobs.

Sometimes it’s the schedule. You’ve been spending more time away from home than you want to. Other times you’ve been doing the same type of driving for years and wouldn’t mind trying something different. There doesn’t even have to be anything particularly wrong with your current job. It never hurts to see what else is out there.

If you’ve spent much of your career on the road, you already know the difference that makes. Finishing your workday and heading home is a lot different than figuring out where you’re spending another night.

Never Driven Flatbed? That’s Okay.

One thing that sometimes keeps experienced drivers from looking at flatbed jobs is the experience requirement.

You might have years behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer but have never worked with chains, straps, binders or flatbed load securement. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to rule out a flatbed position with Beemac.

Qualified drivers can receive training to learn the flatbed side of the job.

Applicants should have a valid Class A CDL, at least 9 months of verifiable Class A tractor-trailer experience and a safe driving record. Previous flatbed experience is not required for qualified CDL-A drivers.

There is more hands-on work involved with flatbeds. Loads have to be secured correctly, equipment needs to be checked and different freight can require a different approach. Those are things you’ll learn as part of the training.

For a driver who’s been interested in flatbed but hasn’t had the opportunity to get started, this can be a way to learn it without already having years of flatbed experience.
