Pittsburgh CDL-A Jobs: No Flatbed Experience Required | Beemac Trucking
At Beemac Trucking, we talk to experienced CDL-A drivers pretty regularly who are interested in flatbed but have never actually pulled one.
The question usually comes up early in the conversation: “Can I apply if I don’t have flatbed experience?”
You can.
We’re currently hiring Class A company drivers throughout Greater Pittsburgh, including Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, and Washington Counties. You need at least nine months of verifiable Class A tractor-trailer experience, but you don’t need to come in with previous flatbed experience.
Flatbed Takes Some Getting Used To
There’s quite a bit that’s different when you move from a van to a flatbed.
Load securement is probably the biggest one.
You need to learn when to use straps, when a load calls for chains, how everything needs to be secured and what needs to be checked before you pull out.
That’s not something most drivers are going to pick up overnight.
Our experienced team works with drivers who are new to flatbed and teaches the basics of load securement, strapping, chaining and safe freight handling. From there, it’s a matter of getting experience and becoming more comfortable with the work.
It’s Definitely More Hands-On
That’s one of the first differences drivers notice.
You’re working with the freight instead of simply putting it inside a trailer and shutting the doors. That means a little more work on your end, but some drivers prefer it that way.
The freight changes too.
One load could be steel. The next could be building materials, machinery or equipment. You’re not necessarily doing the exact same thing every day.
For a lot of drivers, it’s simply another skill they’ve wanted to learn.
What Do You Need?
The requirements are pretty simple:
- Valid Class A CDL
- At least nine months of verifiable Class A tractor-trailer experience
After that, there’s going to be some learning involved.
You won’t know everything on day one. We don’t expect you to.
That’s the whole point of training.
